Prescription Medication Compounding

Sometimes the health needs of a patient cannot be treated by typical over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. In cases like these, a compounded medication is an excellent alternative.

Compounding is the process of combining, mixing, or altering the ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. This process typically involves two or more medications and can take the form of internal or topical (skin-applied) medication.

Compounded prescriptions

are recommended for those who:

  • Have an allergy to a certain dye or chemical in some OTC medications
  • Have difficulty swallowing a pill, such as an elderly patient or a child, or otherwise need a medicine in a liquid, gummie or other easily-delivered form

The practice of compounding drugs allows for custom-tailored medicine, designed with the individual in mind instead of a one size fits all modality.
